A collective community effort. For Taiwan.

In May 2021, Taiwan began experiencing its worst outbreak of Covid-19 yet. Public health restrictions hit those already in need the hardest. A group of diaspora who had moved to Taiwan decided to fundraise for local organizations that were assisting the most vulnerable. Drawing on our global backgrounds, we lined up sponsors and partners from both Taiwan and abroad to give back to the country we call home.

We researched on-the-ground organizations with excellent track records for helping low-income individuals, victims of domestic violence, migrant workers, and the homeless or people with disabilities. These organizations provided these people with the necessary food and shelter or emergency income in order to survive this period of acute crisis.

Early on, we decided to channel donations directly to organizations without having transfer funds through third-party platforms or our personal accounts. However, we quickly identified a few key obstacles, including the lack of English-language donation sites, and the inability of some local organizations to receive donations from foreign banks or credit cards.

So we worked with these organizations to set up English versions of their donation sites, to choose payment systems that can handle foreign transactions, and to craft friendly messages that would reach a global audience. Three organizations are members of NetiCRM, a Taiwanese constituent relationship management system for non-profits operated by NETivism.

Taiwan has helped other countries fight the pandemic. Now it is our turn to help Taiwan. We are grateful to these organizations for collaborating with us, setting up new systems that will expand their outreach and connect Taiwan with the world.
